1. Toyota Outlines Timeline for Restoring Normal Production
After an in-depth analysis of its suppliers affected by the earthquake and tsunami, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced late today that global production will begin to ramp up as soon as July in Japan and August in North America, with all models back to normal production by November or December 2011.
The one-month difference in the start date is due to the time required to ship parts from Japan to overseas plants.
“To all the customers who made the decision to buy a vehicle made by us, I sincerely apologize for the enormous delay in delivery,” said TMC President Akio Toyoda at a press conference in Japan today announcing the normalization timeline
Currently, manufacturing plants in Japan are working at 50 percent of capacity due to parts availability, while those in North America are operating at 30 percent of capacity because of the parts supply situation.
The company said it plans to continue procuring parts from the same suppliers, but it will consider substitute parts from other suppliers. TMC said there are approximately 150 parts affecting new-vehicle production, mainly electronic, rubber and paint-related. However, replacement parts for sales service and repair are available.
TMC also said it is continuing to do all it can to minimize the impact on employment. In North America, it was announced earlier this week that there are no plans for layoffs at manufacturing plants.
The intent of this announcement is to enable dealers, suppliers and associates to plan more effectively.
“Our entire company is committed to solving the problems before us,” Toyoda said, “so that we can achieve production recovery even one day sooner.”
2. Toyota Contributions to Earthquake Relief Fund Top $10.8 Million
Monetary Donations:
Toyota’s North American associates/team members, dealers, suppliers, business partners and friends have donated more than $4.0 million for Japan earthquake/tsunami relief efforts. When combined with TMC’s $3.75 million donation, plus Toyota Industries Corporation’s $1.2 million, Johnson Controls’ $1.0 million and $660,000 from TMC executives and employees, Toyota’s contributions to support relief efforts have reached more than $10.8 million to date.
Associates at TMS, TFS, TMA and TEMA (which includes CAPTIN, TMMBC and TMMC) have committed over $471,000, which will be matched by each respective company. This sum is before matching funds. In addition, Toyota and Lexus dealers plus suppliers, business partners and friends in the United States have donated more than $2.0 million, plus $500,000 from Gulf States Toyota (GST) and $750,000 from Southeast Toyota (SET).
Provision of vehicles:
TMC is arranging the provision of about 210 cars in total for use in the four affected prefectures.
Provision of apartments:
TMC will provide 160 apartments for families and 320 single-occupancy apartments in Aichi Prefecture to members of the public evacuated from the affected areas through prefectural or local authorities.
Provision of supplies:
Toyota has been providing such items as foodstuffs, drinking water, sundry goods (blankets, towels, paper diapers, clothes etc.), medical supplies and tools for recovery efforts (rainboots, rubber gloves and sandbags). As of April 20, 87 trucks have made deliveries, some containing items for the recovery efforts collected from dealerships. Additionally, six tanker trucks have been sent to provide water. Toyota-related companies have also made 16 truckloads of deliveries.
